SPA has recently completed a project in West Hampstead, London – a garden maisonette with bedrooms at the entrance level and living areas on the upper floor. To reinstate the circulation logic in the property, the movement starts with the boldly tiled entrance hall, which leads ones eye on to the exposed, red-oxide-painted, structural steel column and beam. The steel structure is supporting the communal staircase above. With the appearance of an industrial leftover turned into a home, the exposed steel, contrasting the stained ply stairs, becomes a story itself. Similar to the poetic awkwardness of Anthony Caro’s sculptures, the steel elements are now the key in the spatial experience of the house.
