Attending a site meeting during plastering and skimming of walls and ceilings is one of the most satisfying site visits of the construction period for the architect to witness.
Firstly, there is a rich mixture of surfaces to appreciate. From the blue grit coat of the old plaster walls and the blemish-less baby blue of the new plasterboards both still awaiting the application of their final layers to the almost glossy, ochre smoothness of the fresh skim coat in the process of drying out, right through the soft powdery pinkness of the dry new plaster. An unintentional palette created entirely by the process of building.
Secondly, this is when, palpably, the spaces start to take their shape and their proportions materialise. Moving through, you begin to feel your ideas are becoming reality. For the client, witnessing this stage of the project’s coming together allows their imagination to start inhabiting the future.
Although unfinished, the project is already full of character and breaming with anticipation.
