Extreme weather patterns have become a norm in most parts of the world. In London, summer heatwaves are particularly taxing on the inhabitants of traditionally-built houses.
We are exploring ways of remodelling a detached house in North London so it could both benefit from the sunshine and avoid unwanted sun-heat in the future.
We are using a simple cardboard model to illustrate – the relationship between the house and its walled garden – the relationship between the house and an outhouse within the garden – the orientation of the house glazing and ways of providing permanent shading by modulating the depth of the facades- ways of providing seasonal shading by external structures
The simplicity of the cardboard model quickly exposes spatial issues that are difficult to identify through drawings alone. The design moves back and forth between the model and the drawing. Aided by the act of making, it develops organically, more enjoyably and ultimately more successfully. A beautiful process.
